Chapter Eight

JONATHAN

The moment the clock struck 5:00 P.M., I loosened the tie from around my neck and leaned back in my desk chair as my desktop computer began powering down. It had been a rough week at work, so I was thankful to have survived. I was an app developer for a prominent mobile phone company who felt it was necessary always to remain ahead of the competition. This week alone, I designed three new mobile applications, worked with the training and development team to roll them out, and responded to hundreds of issues with the latest and older apps I’d designed. A brother was exhausted.

Meeting with Dawn had been the highlight of my day during my lunch hour today. I had to admit that my expectations were pretty low, but that was my fault for judging a book by its cover. Before our meeting, I did a thorough background check on Mrs. Manning, and I had already verified almost everything she told me.

I hoped she would continue painting a different picture of herself for me as time progressed because I felt like I wanted something more from her. Yes, I wanted the child, but I considered the package deal after our encounter. All she needed was for a man to show her how to be adequately loved. There was some hesitance in the back of my mind because she might not have been ready for that, but I was still willing to try.

Being Jonathan Drake, I was always known as a low-key kind of guy. I love my parents and siblings, hang out with the fellas a few times a month, and hit the gym as my stress reliever. I didn’t do too much drama or unnecessary bullshit. Dawn didn’t seem to get too wrapped up in drama; I liked that about her.

Dawn captivated me when she told me the truth about not knowing who the child's father was. Women would always lie about that, so I know it took a lot for her to tell me.

As I went back and forth in my thoughts about her, I tried to pinpoint any additional flaws or uncertainties, but there were none. She presented her authentic self; that was just what I needed to make me feel comfortable going through this journey.

“Hey man, are you meeting us at YOLO for drinks?” My coworker Aaron tapped on the door before walking into my office. As tired as I was, I knew I wasn’t going home to do shit, so I had no excuse to get out of going.

“Yeah, man, this week was straight bullshit.” I groaned.

“I feel you on that. One of the proposals I submitted just got denied for the second time. I’m ready to say fuck it at this point.” Aaron explained. I felt terrible for him because I knew he had worked on that proposal for three months after it was denied the first time. That was a tough pill to swallow.

“First round of drinks on me, man, don’t sweat that shit,” I told him as I stood up to grab my wallet and key out of my desk drawer.
